ONCE UPON A TIME...
...in
the year before the millenium, a nucleus was formed, which was comprised of
two gentlemen, Bro. Leroy Adams and Bro. Zephani E. Gatson. The nucleus was
made stronger with the addition of another key individual, Bro. Alastair A.
Hunte. These three brothers having been involved in many collegiate affairs
decided that there was an obligation to bring about a change for the betterment
of the student experience at Stephen F. Austin State University.
These three brothers, having knowledge of other campus organizations both greek
and non-greek, decided to take all the positive aspects of these organizations
and improve upon them to bring forth one organization which would excel far
above the rest. Through hard work, time, and much dedication, these men managed
to handle the tasks at hand in conjuction with their everyday activities. The
task was completed when the consensus to bring about Iota Phi Theta Fraternity
Incorporated was agreed upon. The initial paper work for the beginning stages
of this seemingly long process was filled-out, approved, and signed by those
designated persons. Preparations were made for the first interest meeting.
On Thursday, March 11, 1999, Bro. Adams, Bro. Gatson, and Bro. Hunte held the
first interest meeting in the Multicultural Center at 7:05 p.m., with the attendance
of 15-20 interested persons. Out of these people, there was an aura of uncertainty
for bringing about a new fraternal organization to the campus. Although there
was not a unanimous decision amongst the interest group, the nucleus of the
three remained persistent, as well as patient, until the Fall of 1999. It was
at this time that three other brothers became a part of this group. Transferring
from Kilgore Junior College as a junior, Bro. Isaac Gooch was added to the group.
Another individual, Bro. Tyrance Holsey, who transferred from Angelina College
as a sophomore, was also added to the group. After extensive research and conversation,
the last person added to the group was Bro. Javani King, a sophomore, who attended
Stephen F. Austin State University.
